Recorded in 1927 with an orchestra conducted by George Byng the Australian baritone Peter Dawson sings Non piu andrai ( sung in English) from Act 1 of The Marriage of Figaro.
Dawson made his name as a singer of popular ballads making hundreds of records, mainly for HMV. He declined to become an opera singer on the grounds that it was a lot of work for little pay. That was operas loss. His wide range and faultless diction would have been great assets to him in the opera house. He did however respond to criticism of the poor quality of the songs be made popular by giving recitals of German lieder and French and Russian songs.
